Is faux meat the answer?

September 1st, 2010

We frequently get asked why we don’t serve eggs or bacon but we do also get the occasional question “Why don’t you serve mock burgers and fries?

Now that is a question that can be debated at length, but ultimately it does not work in with what we want to be doing at the moment. We know that it works very successfully in many places around the world and we would be the first to acknowledge that there is a time and place for everything.

We don’t serve mock meat for our own reasons below:

- it is a heavily processed food

- some mock meat contains egg and dairy anyway

- heavily processed soy is incredibly bad for you

- it is essentially fast food

Mock meat does not fit in with our ethos so we like to stick to meals that were never intended to have meat in the first place.

We use grains, veggies, fruit, beans and legumes i.e. eliminating as much as possible that has been processed and instead turning to a purer way of eating. For that reason we don’t have any microwaves and use the gas stove only.

Zen Brownies

August 3rd, 2010

The good old humble brownie. In the distant past only known in America and Canada, is now a very popular treat in Australia. It is especially enticing when coupled with a beautifully handcrafted coffee using the customer’s choice of brewing method. We didn’t need to think long in order to mix two very popular beans/seeds (coffee and cocoa) to create our Zen brownie. Each brownie contains approximately a double ristretto of the weekly coffee which means that our customers walk out feeling very much alive!

To make us feel better, our brownies are fully vegan!

See photos below of 35 Ethiopian Yirgacheffe SMS espressos in one measuring cup ready to be used for our batch of brownies… any volunteers to try sculling that?

Our version of a chai wallah

July 22nd, 2010

Chai can be such a wonderful and nurturing drink (especially in winter). When we opened, we didn’t serve any chai as we weren’t happy with what was commercially available out there. Our solution was to experiment and try to produce the best chai recipe that would suit us and our clientele.

We sought some advice from tea guru Nathan Wakeford from Somage and we came up with our own Monk Bodhi Dharma chai recipe. Even though we are all multi-tasking creatures at Monk, during busy times, one of our duties is to be chai wallahs (a wallah is one who performs a specific task). We brew our chai for 4 minutes (30grams) and then steam it with the customer’s choice of milk. We then sieve it in a Japanese handmade chai pot and serve it in custom made pottery made by the wonderful Karen Ho. Bliss!

Who is Monk Bodhi Dharma?

June 30th, 2010

Monk Bodhi Dharma is a specialty coffee and tea house that endeavours to serve healing and sustainable food made from scratch.

The name is derived from Bodhidharma, who was a 5th century Indian monk to whom history has credited the introduction of Zen Buddhism to China and Japan. During a silent, nine-year cave meditation retreat, he fell asleep and being so frustrated on his failure to stay awake he cut off his eyelids to ward off sleep. According to the legend, the world’s first tea plants sprouted from the place upon which his eyelids fell. Thereafter, tea was taken as a stimulant during meditation. Tea is also known to be called “Bodhidharma’s eye lids”.

It is still not exactly known how coffee and tea evolved and their exact relationship in history. One theory is that when Admiral Cheng Ho removed tea supply to the Arabic Peninsula, their people turned to coffee which then spread through Europe and the rest of the world.

Monk Bodhi Dharma roasts specialty coffee on-site and rotates coffees from other specialty coffee roasters. Monk Bodhidharma uses a reserve range of teas and precise infusion methods.

On the food side, Monk Bodhidharma serves a global menu that will feed the weary traveler.
